Bats In Attics Ireland

Bats are a protected species in Ireland. Exterminate receive lots of calls about removing bats from Attic Spaces.

Unfortunately, this is not permissible in law. You are not allowed to remove bats or block access for bats to the attic space as this is likely a roost for the bats.

If you want to undertake work in the attic, repairs etc. this is allowable as long as you do not disturb the bats or interfere with their resting sites in the attic space.

Bats usually enter an attic space in April or May and stay until around September. This is for breeding purposes, they are female bats who give birth to only one offspring which requires suckling for several week after.

Bats generally leave in September when their offspring can fly with them. Bats can continue to hibernate in attics throughout the winter, but would be mainly inactive.

It is frustrating to people when they hear that the bats which are often causing a mess in their attic cannot be interferred with. Sometimes, the bats can be heard making noise at night, which unsettles the homeowner.

Bats are harmless and won’t interfere with you, if you don’t interfere with them. Bats can move on from a roost spontaneously and the problem is naturally overcome.
